I got curious about sex. Sounds weird, but hear me out; my parents were inclined to not give me 'the talk' until I got my period, which wasn't until I was 15. But I got curious before then, went to sites like Scarleteen, and learned (no, I didn't instantly go out and put my knowledge into practice; I was 11 at the time, and remained a virgin until I was 15). When my parents did try to give me the talk, I knew more than they did, and kept correcting misinformation they had.
I realized that I wasn't limited by the level of my parents. In some areas, I could move beyond them. It was more than just rebellion…in fact, it wasn't even really that. It was changing deep parts of myself that hadn't felt right, but that it'd never occurred to me to change. I gave up being agnostic and became religious, I allowed myself different political views and, best of all, learned to speak out when I thought they were doing something to me that was doing more harm than good. I went through a ton of shit because they were doing things said by outdated 'experts'. When I really broke free, I was able to say, "This isn't working." Lucky me, they were understanding. They listened.
My life is better because of me being a late bloomer. Hehehe.
